REVIEW: THE HISTORY OF WHOOSPA OIL SHOWER & ESSENTIAL MOISTURIZER

KATHERINE SPOWART on FEBRUARY 7, 2020

The History of Whoo is one of the most luxurious Korean brands on the market. So when I received their Whoospa Oil Shower and Essential Moisturizer for testing, I was beyond excited to see how this brand would perform in the body care category. After several months of trying these out, let’s review!

BRAND BACKGROUND

This brand is globally known for its “royal” presence in the Korean beauty industry. Their brand story is based on the power of the beauty secrets of the historic royal court combined with modern science to create premium formulas parceled up in exquisite packaging. Herbal ingredients are central in their products with an emphasis on traditional Korean remedies.  How the products are packaged and presented is particularly notable, and they even have a store dedicated to the breathtaking displays of past product releases on Garosu-gil, in the Gangnam area of Seoul.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The products I’m reviewing today from the Whoospa line are the Oil Shower, a body cleanser and Essential Moisturizer. The Whoospa line is formulated to calm the skin from external stress. Descriptions of the products are as follows:

Whoospa Oil Shower- “The Whoo’s premium body cleanser is made of a formulation with herbal SPA ingredient oil. This body wash will not only remove the external waste from the skin but will also protect the skin from burnouts of frequent showers and dryness”. While the English is a little wobbly (not sure how I feel about the term ‘external waste’), my expectations were that this high-end product would leave my skin feeling soft and rejuvenated.

Whoospa Essential Moisturizer- “The Whoo’s premium body moisturizer effectively and actively delievers (yes, this is spelled incorrectly on the insert) the herbal spa ingredient on the skin. Wipe off the water after shower and put appropriate amount on the hand and gently apply it on your body from bottom to top.” The English is horrible, and I think it’s quite shocking that such a famous, well-known brand would have such an obvious spelling mistake in their description, to be honest. I understand that Korean companies do not have to market to international audiences, but if the brand includes English in an informational insert, they need to at least do it correctly. It’s lazy and a premium brand should not have those mistakes.

Also rather disappointingly, I cannot find an English ingredients list anywhere on the product, packaging or online. Again, this would be fine if there was no English on the bottle’s insertbut there is, so I feel like there should also be an English ingredients list.

PACKAGING

The packaging did not disappoint. They’re stunning, from the embossed brown exterior boxes to the elegant, gold-detailed bottles themselves. The entire design is what makes the products premium. The intricate clips to prevent the pumps from leaking stand out to me as “so extra” and that detail continues down the neck of each bottle. The simplistic design of the rest of each bottle contrasted to those details makes for a beautiful combination. The muted gold colors exude luxury.

The bottles are made from plastic and are much lighter than expected. Although I’m not a fan of plastic, it’s difficult to use glass for shower products and I appreciate that the products are bathroom-friendly. Having a pump dispenser is the only good option for a shower wash and moisturizer, so I’m pleased these are both pump products!

SCENT

My expectation of the scent was something herbal and earthy, which typically I love. However, these products do not embody that scent. Instead, they are entirely floral which is not my cup of tea. They smell so artificially fragranced and that was a big disappointment!

TEXTURE

Once I got past the scent, the texture of the body oil wash was a very pleasant surprise. It initially seems quite thin and unremarkable when first dispensed. However, once I begin massaging it into my damp skin, it feels beautifully moisturizing and turns into what feels like  a foaming shower oil. It feels so luxurious and soft on the skin and it lathers up very well considering it’s an oil and not a gel. I thoroughly enjoy using it and feel like it cleans but doesn’t strip my skin. A little goes a long way too, which is always a positive.

The texture of the lotion is similarly beautiful. It’s thick and luxurious, yet not overly heavy and uncomfortable. It has little beads in it that melt into the skin as you rub it in, but again I can’t find any information about what their material is.  My skin feels so soft and supple afterward!

OVERALL THOUGHTS

The quality of the products is completely aligned with the price point- around $35 each on Jolse. They’re a premium price and the packaging, texture, and results of both the oil wash and moisturizer are, to be completely honest, perfect. My skin loved them and felt nourished and soft every single time I used the pair. They’re some of the most satisfying body products I’ve used in terms of texture and results. The downside? I’ve been struggling with the scent and a scent greatly influences how much I enjoy a product like a body wash or moisturizer. If they’re high-end products with an equally high-end price tag, I want a scent I love in order to create a sensory experience with the product, and this scent just doesn’t work for me. Of course, the scent is such a personal point of judgment, but unfortunately on this occasion, the scent would prevent me from spending that kind of money repurchasing these. Such a shame when I enjoyed the rest of the experience so much!

Have you ever tried a product you loved with a scent you truly disliked?

Spam I'm super sensitive with the packaging, and those are stunning too! They're real pearls!
Monday morning, don't wanna work, go in my bathroom to prepare, and see those beautiful pearls and other aestéthics products, be sure I'll be in a good mood!
If texture and quality are awesome, too, I'm sure to feel beautiful and fresh to go!

Spam History is generally a unique thing. I had this shampoo. I recently wrote a paper at university about the history of shampoos. Found a history essay writer to help, used https://essays.edubirdie.com/history-essay-writer for this. There's really not much information about this. Moreover, all versions are completely different. There is no single point of view.
