HYALURONIC ACID – WHAT IT IS AND DOES

Hyaluronic acid is a darling ingredient in the skincare industry, as well as a naturally occurring element in thehuman body. But why is hyaluronic acid so beloved? Hydration!

Hyaluronic acid is a favorite in the skincare world for one reason: it keeps skin firm, plump and hydrated. Hyaluronic acid can hold 6000% of its weight in water! Hydrated indeed! Due to its ability to hang on to water, this type of ingredient used in serums and moisturizers is known as a humectant. As Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, make sure you always use another moisturizer if you are using it as a full strength serum. If you do not give the serum moisture to work with, it will start pulling it from your skin.  Not what you want to happen!

Hyaluronic acid can also have a smaller molecular size which makes it easier for the product to penetrate the surface of the skin. Hyaluronic acid can also be used as a filler for plastic surgeons. Basically, its lube for your body as it can also be taken internally as a supplement, but you should always check with your doctor first.

The nice thing about hyaluronic acid is that it doesn’t have many side effects. Not to say that it doesn’t have any when applied topically, but it is rare and could also be attributed to other ingredients in the product.
