WHAT’S THE FUSS ABOUT THE PAINFUL

 “DAMN SERUM” AKA NACIFIC’S

FRESH HERB ORIGIN SERUM?

Is the “Damn Serum” really painful?

AMY DANG on NOVEMBER 7, 2019

The Internet has spoken. Nacific’s Fresh Herb Origin Serum has been dubbed the “Damn Serum”. Why? Because it is apparently painful yet powerfully effective, eliciting perhaps a “Damn this product is amazing” kind of reaction, or maybe a “Damn this is hella painful” response. Was it the first or the latter? Or maybe a bit of both? Let’s find out.

THE SERUM

Known as Jun Ji Hyun’s holy grail product, Nacific’s Fresh Herb Origin Serum promises radiant skin and minimized pores thanks to its aloe vera and botanical oils (full ingredient list below). The serum comes with a handy dropper for easy and precise application. Make sure to shake the bottle properly before use, as you’ll notice that there are two distinct layers that form due to the oils separating from the water components (see picture). Despite its many oils, the texture is more watery in consistency than viscous.

THE SMELL

Some will love it, some will hate it. I thankfully fall in the former category. The scent of this serum is very potent — you can smell it as soon as you open it! The serum has a bright, zesty citrus scent to it, which I personally quite enjoy. It feels very refreshing and invigorating, and “tingles” my olfactory senses in all the best ways possible. But again, it is a very strong scent, so those with sensitive skin or fragrance sensitivities might find this overbearing.

THE FEELING

As previously mentioned, many reviews claim the serum is “painful” due to the tingling sensation one feels while using it. This is apparently because the skin is reacting to the many active ingredients formulated in the serum. The more damaged and oxidized your skin is, the more of a prickly/tingly effect you’ll feel when applying it.

Luckily for me, I didn’t experience this sensation at all. My skin actually reacted quite well. What I experienced instead was more of a warm feeling. While applying the serum, it felt as if my hands were “activating” the ingredients and thus warming up my skin. The warmth is definitely something I’ve experienced using other Vitamin C serums, which also contain acidic ingredients. Perhaps my use of similarly formulated serums explains why my skin didn’t react as badly as others claimed. Thankfully, the serum didn’t clash with any of my other skincare products either, and was quite the perfect addition to both my morning and nighttime routines.

The serum is particularly oily, more oily than I would typically be used to with other serums. Usually my skin gets super oily in the summer and quite dry once the fall and winter seasons hit. Since I started using this serum right during fall though, the oils actually helped my skin stay hydrated. Not once did my T-zone get flaky or dry, which usually happens after applying makeup. I will say that the serum does leave a somewhat greasy/sticky feeling on the skin right after application, which some might find off putting. However, it does absorb into the skin very quickly, and after drying, it leaves your skin feeling smooth and velvety.

THE TAKEAWAY

While I typically tend to stray away from oily products, Nacific’s Fresh Herb Origin Serum was a pleasant surprise. After just a few weeks of use, I can already attest to its claims of brightening and tightening the skin. And of course, it was super effective in keeping my skin hydrated throughout the dry autumn days. However, I haven’t noticed any effects on my pores just yet. Perhaps long term use might change that.

My overall takeaway is that oily products can be beneficial for oily/combination skin! Just be sure to use a proper amount (a little comes a long way!) and check the ingredients list first. I would totally recommend trying out this serum for its many healing and hydrating effects, especially during the dryer months. All skin types react differently though, so do try reading a few more reviews to make sure this serum is right for you. I guess my final answer is that the serum did live up to its nickname… ‘cause damn it was good!
